The Global Talent visa is the most flexible work route the UK has. There is no employer, no job offer, no salary threshold and no English test. Instead an expert body in your field endorses you as a leader or a potential leader, and the Home Office grants a visa of up to five years on the strength of that. You can then work for anyone, for yourself, or for nobody at all.

The three fields and their endorsing bodies

  • Academia and research: the Royal Society (science and medicine), the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Academy (humanities and social sciences) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). There are fast tracks for people appointed to an eligible senior academic post, for holders of certain fellowships, and for researchers named on a UKRI-approved grant.
  • Arts and culture: Arts Council England, which also handles architecture (via RIBA), fashion (via the British Fashion Council) and film and television (via PACT). You need to show recognition in at least two countries, with evidence such as reviews, awards, sales and significant appearances.
  • Digital technology: Tech Nation, which assesses founders, engineers, product and technical staff at product-led digital companies. You need to meet one mandatory criterion (proven innovation or recognition) and two of four optional ones, with letters from three recognised experts.

Prize winners

Winners of listed prestigious prizes, from the Nobel and Fields Medal through the Turner Prize, the Oscars, Grammys and BAFTAs to the Turing Award, skip the endorsement stage and apply for the visa directly. The list is in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.

Exceptional talent or exceptional promise

Each endorsing body grades you as exceptional talent (already a recognised leader) or exceptional promise (likely to become one, usually earlier in your career). The grade decides when you can settle: three years' residence for talent, five for promise. Both grades get the same visa and the same freedoms.

The two-stage application

  1. Endorsement. You apply on gov.uk, pay £561, and the endorsing body reviews your evidence: a CV, a personal statement, three letters of recommendation and up to ten pieces of evidence of up to three pages each. Most bodies decide within eight weeks; UKRI and the fast tracks are quicker. If you are refused you can ask for a review but there is no appeal.
  2. The visa. Once endorsed, you pay £205 for the visa itself, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge for the years you choose (one to five). Decisions take about three weeks from abroad and eight in the UK. You pick the length; choosing five years means one health-surcharge payment of £5,175 but no further application until settlement.

What you can do

Work for any employer, freelance, found a company, take a sabbatical or research abroad for extended periods. Partners and children can join you and work freely. Absences from the UK for research or work in your field do not break continuous residence for settlement, a concession unique to this route and to researchers; ordinary holidays still count towards the 180-day limit.

Settlement

You apply for ILR after three or five years. You must show you have earned money in your field in the UK during the visa (a letter from an employer or evidence of self-employment), pass the Life in the UK test and meet the B1 English requirement at that stage. The May 2025 white paper said Global Talent would keep a fast route to settlement under the proposed ten-year standard; the detail was still awaited when this page was reviewed.

Is it worth trying? Endorsement rates are far lower than on sponsored routes, especially for exceptional talent in digital technology, and £561 is lost if you fail. Read the endorsing body's published criteria and example evidence carefully before paying. People on a Skilled Worker visa can switch to Global Talent in the UK, and doing so removes the tie to an employer and, for exceptional talent, can bring settlement forward by two years.
